Dr Claire Barrett is a Consultant Rheumatologist and Senior Lecturer at University of Queensland.
She graduated from University College, London in 1987 with 1st class honours BSc in Human Genetics. After working in London for several years she arrived in Redcliffe, SE QLD, in 1991. Having completed rheumatology training in 1996, she was appointed as Visiting Medical Officer at Redcliffe Hospital, initiating a public specialist rheumatology service. She is a Director of Redcliffe and Northside Rheumatology, with outreach clinics in Longreach.
Dr Barrett is involved in education of medical students, registrars and GPs. She is a past-chair of the Metro North Hospital and Health Service (MNHHS) Rheumatology Sub-stream being passionately committed to improving access to high quality rheumatology care for all patients in QLD Health.
She was a part of the working group that crafted the 2009 RACGP guidelines on management of early RA and a member of the Australian Rheumatology Association (ARA) Clinical Care Standards Working Group. She has previously chaired a number of ARA Committees including Therapeutics, Regional Rheumatology and Policy and Advocacy and is currently chairing the ARA Risk committee and a member of the Clinical Resources Committee. She is a member of the ARA Database steering committee. She is a past President of the QLD branch of ARA in addition to a past Honorary Secretary and Vice-President of the ARA. She was appointed President of the ARA in May 2022.
Dr Barrett’s research interests include RA and pregnancy, telehealth and regional rheumatology.
She enjoys living on the Redcliffe Peninsula with her husband, savouring visits from any of the five children and four grandchildren.
